Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro has already received the official TWRP recovery. However, just like usual, the official build includes no support to MIUI OTA update. At this point, its ported builds have the advantages.
One of ported TWRP builds is Orange Fox Recovery Project (TWRP). Some users also call it OrangeFox TWRP. Despite being an alternative, this recovery offers many advantages, not only the ability to survive MIUI OTA update but also the inclusion of built-in Magisk root, Aroma Installer, DM-Verity Disabler, Force Encryption Disabler, and so on.
In short, it is a cooler version of TWRP. Here, we at MIUI blog use OFRP on all our Xiaomi devices. We switched to Orange Fox from the official TWRP once it becomes available.
We also encourage you to switch to OFRP if there’s still enough bravery on you. Flashing TWRP is brave enough, switching to Orange Fox makes you a hero.
This article shows you all the required steps to install Orange Fox recovery on Redmi Note 6 Pro device. The phone is another iteration of Redmi Note 5 but this one has a notch on its display.
The phone has recently received another iterations which are Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. Read here for the specs comparison of both new iterations.
We believe that all the steps in this flashing procedure are safe. Unless you do it wrong. Hence, please read the whole steps thoroughly before actually implementing it.
Neither we nor Orange Fox developer hold responsibilities of any damages that may happen with your phone.
It is always a good practice to create a full backup of your phone prior flashing a third-party binaries package. At least, create backups of your crucial data and files such as Contacts, Messages, Apps, Apps Data, Photos, Videos, and so on.
Moreover, flashing Orange Fox will replace the stock MIUI recovery on your phone. Please proceed with full caution.
Without further ado, let’s go to the steps of flashing it on your device.
How to Install Orange Fox Recovery
Step 1. Unlock the bootloader. Read and follow our previous guide on how to unlock MIUI bootloader.
Step 3. Download Orange Fox TWRP for Tulip here. It’s a zip file. You need to download it on both your computer and your phone.
Step 4. On your computer, extract the Orange Fox zip file (OrangeFox-R9.0-tulip.zip) you have downloaded. You will get many files including a file named “recovery.img“.
Step 5. Copy that recovery.img file to your ADB folder. Usually, the ADB directory is located at C:\adb\.
Step 6. Enable USB Debugging option. This option is available within Developer Options menu. Hence, you have to enable it at first.
Enabling Developer Options, go to:
Settings >> About phone >> tap the MIUI version 7x >> You are developer!
Enable USB Debugging, go to:
Settings >> Additional Settings >> Developer Options >> USB Debugging >> toggle it on.
A notification will pop up on your screen. Tap “OK“.
Step 7. Now connect your Redmi Note 6 Pro device to your computer using its USB cable.
Step 8. On your computer, hold down the Shift key and right-click anywhere inside the ADB folder (C:\adb\). Choose “Open PowerShell window here“.
Step 9. Now type following command and hit Enter key to execute it:
adb reboot bootloader
This instructs your computer to establish ADB connection with your device while verifying any device attached. Second, this also reboots your device into Fastboot mode (bootloader mode).
You will see your phone rebooting and you will also see the Mi Bunny Fastboot logo displayed.
Step 10. Do the “Hot recovery boot” by typing the command below:
fastboot boot recovery.img
At this stage, your phone shall reboot into Orange Fox recovery.
p.s: Images are for illustration purpose only.
Step 11. Do the “Swipe to allow modifications“. You shall enter the main menu afterward.
Step 12. You will then see the main menu of Orange Fox recovery. Choose “Install“.
Step 13. Find and select the Orange Fox zip file (e.g: OrangeFox-R9.0-tulip.zip).
Step 14. Do the “Swipe to Install” action. As soon as you swiped, your phone will flash the zip file of Orange Fox recovery.
Step 15. Your phone will automatically reboot into Orange Fox recovery again. This time is not a hot boot but the actual recovery booting using the one installed on your phone already.
At this point forward, you can use Orangefox TWRP to flash almost anything. For instance, you can either use it for rooting via Magisk or flashing other mods such as Camera2 API enabled, etc.
- Xiaomi Magisk Root Tool (Installer, Uninstaller, Magisk Manager APK).
- Camera2 Enabler API Magisk Module.
You have been successfully flashed OFRP. At this stage, you can now flash almost anything such as custom ROMs, custom Kernels, and so on.
Getting root access is also a piece of cake. You can choose either to use the built-in Magisk or to download the latest zip file.
