- A Guide to Flash Genom Kernel on Redmi 7
Xiaomi Redmi 7 is one of Redmi’s iterations bringing the best value specs for the money. Recently, the device receives renewed competitions from Realme, Asus, Vivo, and even Samsung.
Thanks to Xiaomi’s popularity, the company’s child brand Redmi will passthrough the same success.
Xiaomi is popular for two things. First, the phones are available at very affordable prices. Second, its developer-friendly supports.
The company always releases kernel sources for all of devices lineup. Hence, third-party development can flourish rapidly producing cool tweaks and mods.
Redmi 7 currently receives several builds of TWRP, custom ROMs, and now also Kernels. Well, a kernel at least.
About Custom Kernel
What is a custom Android kernel? Basically, a kernel is a low-level driver necessary to allow the software to communicate with the hardware properly. A kernel is the core component of an operating system.
Android, as a mobile operating system, also makes use of kernel as part of its component. The architecture of Android kernel is based on Linux kernel.
A custom kernel is not different. However, the so-called “custom” terminology comes after its origin which is not from the official device manufacturers.
A custom kernel for Redmi 7 means a kernel for Redmi 7 but it’s not the official kernel released by Xiaomi.
About Genom Kernel
Genom Kernel is a custom Android kernel made by Mylove09, an XDA Senior Member.
The kernel is cooked from Linux 4.x kernel base. Currently, this kernel is compatible with any ROM based on Android 9.0 Pie. This includes full support to the official MIUI 10 ROM.
We have great expectation for the developer to update the Genom kernel for future MIUI 11 and Android 10 supports.
As per the developer’s explanation, Genom kernel sports no special features compared to the MIUI stock kernel.
Nevertheless, Genom kernel boasts updates bases including:
- Linux kernel version upstreamed.
- Latest CAF tag
- Latest Wlan Driver Tag
At the time of writing, Genom is currently in the Beta stage but it’s pretty stable for daily usage.
