Flashing TWRP becomes mainstream nowadays. Users now face other alternatives in terms of a custom recovery for their Android phone.
Additional features, different UI styles, enhanced functionalities, and more goodness are just few of their reasons to leave the official TWRP.
Pitch Black Recovery is one of those alternatives. Built upon TWRP base code, PitchBlack comes with advanced abilities including MIUI OTA survival and built-in Magisk root.
However, some users are still confused on how to flash Pitch Black TWRP since it comes in a zip package. Well, the basic concept is basically the same.
You have two options:
First, you can flash the official TWRP and then flash the Picthblack’s zip file in TWRP.
Second, you can boot into Pitch Black TWRP directly, then flash the zip file.
In this tutorial shows you how you can do it via the second option.
As usual, it is our duty to warn you about the risks of flashing something to your phone.
First, flashing a custom recovery will replace the stock MIUI recovery. Hence, there is always a risk of a failed procedure. Expect for damages, bricked state, or system bootloop if you did it wrong.

Steps to Flash Pitch Black on Redmi 5 Plus
We are gonna make the Pitch Black Recovery Project short. Let’s just call it PBRP.
Step 1. Unlock your phone bootloader. This is a must. You can flash any custom recoveries without bootloader unlocked.
Step 3. Download PBRP ZIP file from here. It’s a zip file. You need to download it on both your computer and your phone.
Step 4. On your computer, extract the PBRP zip file (PitchBlack-vince-2.9.0-20181220-0719-OFFICIAL.zip) you have downloaded. You will get 3 folders: META-INF, PBRP, and TWRP.
Step 5. Copy the “recovery.img” file available inside TWRP folder to your ADB folder at C:\adb\.
Step 6. Enable USB Debugging option on your phone. This option is available within Developer Options menu. Hence, you have to enable it at first.
Enabling Developer Options, go to:
Settings >> About phone >> tap the MIUI version 7x >> You are developer!
Enable USB Debugging, go to:
Settings >> Additional Settings >> Developer Options >> USB Debugging >> toggle it on.
A notification will pop up on your screen. Tap “OK“.
Step 7. Now connect your Redmi 5 Plus phone to your computer using its USB cable.
Step 8. On your computer, hold down the Shift key and right-click anywhere inside the ADB folder (C:\adb\). Choose “Open PowerShell window here“.
Step 9. Now type following command and hit Enter key to execute it:
adb reboot bootloader
This instructs your computer to establish ADB connection with your device while verifying any device attached. Second, this also reboots your device into Fastboot mode (bootloader mode). You will see your phone rebooting and you will also see the Mi Bunny Fastboot logo displayed.
Step 10. Do the “Hot recovery boot” by typing the command below:
fastboot boot recovery.img
At this stage, your phone shall reboot into Pitch Black Recovery.
Step 11. Do the “Swipe to allow modifications“. You shall enter the main menu afterward.
Step 12. You will then see the main menu of Pitch Black recovery. Choose “Install“.
Step 13. Find and select the PBRP zip file (PitchBlack-vince-2.9.0-20181220-0719-OFFICIAL.zip).
Step 14. Do the “Swipe to Confirm Flash” action. As soon as you swiped, your phone will flash the zip file of PBRP.
Step 15. Your phone will automatically reboot into Pitch Black recovery again. This time is not a hot boot, but the actual recovery booting using the one installed on your phone already. If not, tap the Reboot button then choose Recovery.
Congratulation! The Pitch Black TWRP has been installed successfully on your Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus.
At this point, you can continue to either flashing a custom ROM or rooting with Magisk.
Otherwise, you can simply tap “Reboot” in the main menu, then choose “System“. This will bring you back to MIUI.
For your information, Redmi 5 Plus has codename Vince. It is the same device as Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 India – and not the Redmi Note 5 Pro/AI.
