Many consider it still as a mysterious abbreviation, the Mi CC9 (Mi 9 Lite) is a unique Android phone ever made by Xiaomi targetting teenagers and millennial youngsters.
Well, there are multiple meanings behind the abbreviation. Some call it as “Chic and Cool”, “Curious and Creative”, “Challenge and Carry On”, “Camera Clicks”, The CC moniker is already as crazy as your imagination.
In short, the Mi CC9 is a very delightful Android phone shipping not only monster-ish hardware specification but also a stunning design.
The device has been announced and released last month in China. Some rumors leak its next release date in India which is set to be last week this September (Source 1, Source 2). Some others believe that it won’t available globally as Mi CC9 but as Mi A3 instead.
If so, this kinda disappointing for MIUI lovers but it will be great news for Android One fans.
Anyway, soon after its release in China, the unofficial TWRP has been available for the device.
Who built it? The one who has managed to port TWRP custom recovery for Mi CC9 is none other than Wzsx150, a member of LR.Team.
WZsx150 is a nickname of a Chinese developer popular for its quick release of TWRP. Usually, he releases his own build of TWRP within days or weeks after the release date of a certain Xiaomi device in China.
Obviously, the default language set in the TWRP interface is Chinese. Luckily, this is switch-able to English easily.
Without further ado, let’s get into the steps on how to root Mi CC9 using Magisk. The process involves flashing TWRP at the beginning.
We’ll use WZSX150’s TWRP since the unofficial one isn’t available yet at the moment we write this guide.
It is advise-able to create a backup of all important files and data locally. We hold no responsibility for any damage that may happen to your device.
- A Windows computer either a PC or a Laptop.
- A USB data cable. Make sure it’s a data cable and not a charging-only cable. We recommend you to use the one shipped with your device.
- Download ADB Fastboot Installer v1.4.3 (zip).
- Download Android Platform Tools r28.0.1 (zip).
- Download LR.Team TWRP Recovery (.zip).
- Download the latest version of Magisk (zip).
- Download DeScript Universal v2 (zip).
HOW TO FLASH TWRP ON MI CC9 / MI 9 LITE
Step 1. Disable Windows Drivers Signature Enforcement on your computer. This step is not mandatory but is recommended to ensure the drivers being installed properly. We have the detailed tutorial here.
Step 2. Extract Xiaomi ADB Fastboot Driver zip file (miui-ADB-Driver-Installer-v1.4.3.zip) and install it on your computer. This step is necessary to install ADB Fastboot system-wide. Make sure you install it on C:\adb\.
Step 3. Extract the miui-platform-tools_r28.0.1-win.zip on your computer. You’ll get a folder called “platform-tools“. This step is important so that you’ll use the latest version of ADB-Fastboot software.
Step 4. Unlock the bootloader of your phone. Read the full guide on how to unlock MIUI bootloader officially here. Please be aware that the process requires you to reset your phone. All your data will be lost. Unlocked already? Jump to the next step.
Step 5. Extract the “TWRP-3.3.1-0709-Mi-CC9-CN-wzsx150.zip” file using either Winzip or Winrar. You’ll get many files. Find the main image file of Wzsx150’s TWRP.
Step 6. Rename the downloaded recovery from (for instance) recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-0709-XIAOMI_CC9-CN-wzsx150.img to recovery.img file name. Doing so is easy. Simply right-click on the file and choose Rename.
However, if your Windows settings are like mine, you don’t need to type the .img extension. Here’s what we got:
Step 7. Copy/move the recovery.img file to the “platform-tools” folder.
Step 8. Also, copy the misc.bin file to the Platform Tools folder.
Step 9. Now enable USB debugging on your phone. You might have it enabled during the bootloader unlocking process. However, it is a good practice to double-check it.
Enable Developer Options, go to:
Settings >> About phone >> tap the MIUI version 7x >> You are developer!
Enable USB Debugging, go to:
Settings >> Additional Settings >> Developer Options >> USB Debugging >> toggle it on.
A notification will pop up on your screen. Tap the “OK” button.
Step 10. Next, connect the Mi CC9 to your computer using its USB.
Step 11. Choose the “File Transfer” mode when asked (do not choose the charging mode).
Step 12. In Windows Explorer, go to the “platform-tools” folder. Hold down the Shift button on the keyboard, right-click anywhere within that folder, and choose “Open command prompt window/PowerShell window from here“.
Step 13. Now type following lines of command. Hit Enter every each line to issue it.
adb reboot bootloader
The first line asks your computer to recognize your device. The second line instructs your phone to boot into bootloader mode a.k.a fastboot mode. You’ll see the Mi Bunny logo displayed.
This instructs your computer to establish an ADB connection with your device while verifying any device attached. Second, this also reboots your device into Fastboot mode (bootloader mode). You will see your phone rebooting and you will also see the Mi Bunny Fastboot logo displayed.
Step 14. Next, type following command lines and hit Enter on the keyboard:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img fastboot flash misc misc.bin
The first command flashes TWRP to the recovery partition. The process shall finish in a few seconds.
Step 15. It’s time to reboot into TWRP recovery for the very first time. Type this command then hit Enter:
fastboot reboot recovery
Voila! Your phone is now entering TWRP recovery.
You may need to swipe to confirm system modifications. Yes, it is in Chinese but the meaning is predictable. Simply do it and you’ll be in the main menu of TWRP. Again, you can follow steps explained here to switch from Chinese to English.
Some users set either PIN, password, fingerprint unlock or face feature unlock to protect the phone. This, however, makes the phone encrypted.
Consequently, users need to format data losing all that’s stored in it.
Go to “Wipe” from the main menu, choose “Format Data”, then type “yes” to proceed. Reboot to recovery again by typing this command:
fastboot reboot recovery
