What is TWRP Recovery?

TWRP stands for Team Win Recovery Project. It is currently the world’s most popular custom recovery. While most of the stock recoveries do not support touchscreen feature yet, TWRP allows you to navigate through its menus and options easily by tapping on the screen directly.

TWRP is originally developed by Team Win. Nowadays, the team receives many supports for third-party developers giving helping hands in porting TWRP for many Android devices.

However, not all TWRP builds made by third-party developers managed to make their way to the official directory of TWRP. Some start as unofficial ones then getting approved by the team to be official.

Who created TWRP for Mi A3?

Xiaomi Mi A3 is one of the Android phones getting the unofficial build of TWRP recovery. Developed by an XDA member Mauronofrio, this build seems to work just fine on the Mi A3 codename Laurel_sprout.

Mauronofrio is one of third-party TWRP builders. We’ve seen some of its works managed to get into the official repository. We can say most of his efforts well received and successful.

Mauronofrio confirms his build of TWRP for Mi A3 works pretty much awesome except the support for external SD card and OTG is broken.

All other basic TWRP features simply work as expected. You can create and restore backups, wipe partitions, format data, enable ADB Sideload, and even flash Magisk to gain root.

Why Do You Need TWRP?

TWRP is a custom recovery. You won’t need it unless you need to flash “something” not flash-able through the stock recovery. Great examples of these “things” are Magisk root, custom ROM,s custom kernels, certain mods, and tweaks.

Having that said, despite rooting and Android phone does not necessarily need TWRP but the easiest way to do it is through TWRP. Hence, the great chance you’ll need TWRp for rooting your phone. Once rooted, you may also need it to flash custom ROMs.

Our Verdict

Currently, Xiaomi Mi A3 is considerably a new device. Hence, we can see little mods and tweaks for the device. While this unofficial TWRP by Mauronofrio is the first TWRP available for Mi A3 (as what we can see), there will be more builds available.

We expect the official TWRP build becomes available either based on Mauronofrio’s work or based on other’s. We will update this post once this happens.

It would also become more interesting if TWRP ports such as Pitch Black, Orange Fox, or Red Wolf can make their way available for Mi A3.
